What does the $50,000 department split mean?

The Bronx court routes cases by value: a will and more than $50,000 in property → Probate Department; no will and more than $50,000 → Administration Department; under $50,000 in personal property in the decedent's name alone (with or without a will) → Small Estate Department, through voluntary administration.

Can I e-file in Bronx Surrogate's Court?

Partially. Under the court's notice effective April 15, 2026, Accounting and Miscellaneous proceedings (including pleadings and motion papers) may be e-filed via NYSCEF — but they are not processed until the court receives a hard copy of the petition and/or accounting. For other case types, check with the appropriate department or the Help Center before filing.

Are court appearances in person or virtual?

Calendar appearances are conducted virtually. A party may appear in person by notifying the court at least three business days before the scheduled appearance. The court's protocols are set out in the Virtual Appearance Notice, which must be served with every citation.

Can I view court records without going to the Grand Concourse?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Since June 24, 2022, Bronx County Surrogate's Court filings, documents, and historical records can be viewed remotely using the WebSurrogate program.

Is there a deadline for the estate inventory?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The court's Inventory of Assets department (718-618-2385) notes that inventories are due no later than 9 months from the date letters are issued to the fiduciary.

What if no one in the family can administer the estate?

Accepted Answer

The court points those cases to the Bronx County Public Administrator (bxcountypa.com) — for when there is no next of kin available or no one qualifies to file.
